Indian handloom takes pride in surviving the unpredictability of time and sticking to its originality. Patteda Anchu saree is one such weave that weavers from Karnataka have kept since 10th century.
Patteda Anchu is a traditional style of weaving renowned for its unique design and the meticulous craftsmanship involved in its creation. These are typically woven using cotton or a blend of cotton and silk. The fabric is sturdy and durable, making it suitable for daily wear.
The hallmark of Patteda Anchu sarees is the distinctive border design known as "kanneri" or "dog's nose." This design is characterized by small dots arranged in a row along the border, resembling the nose of a dog. Patte means strip and refers to the border of the fabric, lending this saree its unique name. The biggest differentiator is the thick border that runs along the entirety of the fabric, with a single colour line running over it.
The body of the saree often features stripes or checks in vibrant earthy tones such as red, maroon, black, and beige. These colors are achieved using natural dyes, adding to the authenticity and charm of the saree.
Patteda Anchu sarees are woven on traditional handlooms by skilled artisans. The weaving technique involves interlocking warp and weft threads to create the intricate designs and patterns characteristic of the saree. The pallu of a Patteda Anchu saree may feature intricate patterns woven using contrasting colors to create a striking visual impact.
